If you love diamonds, there is no reason that you will not love colored diamonds as well. The most valuable colored diamonds are those that are naturally occurring in the Earth’s mantle. These are rare and only one out of one thousand diamonds come out with a colored hue. Among the colored diamonds, blue comes in third, after yellow and brown, in terms of their availability. Thus, the blue diamond is still a rare find. Surprisingly, the colored diamonds are the result of impurities in the formation of the stone. Boron is said to be the cause for the appearance of blue in a diamond’s structure.

Blue diamonds are exquisite and intriguing. Some even have the ability to conduct electricity. The twenty-seven carat De Beers Millennium diamond, Heart of Eternity, was a blue diamond that was mined from Cullinan.
You have probably heard of the Hope Diamond, which is one of the most famous diamonds worldwide. The Hope Diamond has a deep blue shade and is forty-five point fifty-two carats. It originated in India, where it was known as Tavernier Blue. Then, the French King Louis the Fourteenth purchased it and passed it on to King Louis the Sixteenth, Marie Antoinette, Lord Francis Hope and Evelyn Walsh McLean. The Hope Diamond is shrouded in mystery and is said to bring bad luck to those who are in possession of it.
Another blue diamond that you have probably already encountered is the Idol’s Eye. This diamond is the largest polished blue diamond, weighing seventy carats. Legend has it that the Idol’s Eye was once affixed at the eye of a temple in Benghazi. However, this blue diamond was acquired by American May Stanton after the Second World War. But in terms of popularity, it is Titanic’s Heart of the Ocean or Le Coeur de la Mer that most people, young and old, remember the most when it comes to blue diamonds.
Blue diamonds have different shades, ranging from crystal blue to intense gray blue. These stones look amazing when set on platinum or white gold. Of course, it is all really a matter of taste when it comes to stones and settings. When purchasing blue diamonds, a good place to start is with a reputable jeweler or diamond dealer.
You might want to buy your blue diamonds online, but remember, buying something as precious and valuable like diamonds online is very, very risky. There are times when blue diamonds will be described as “blue topaz diamonds”. You should not buy these diamonds as they are not pure blue diamonds. Here, topaz is used to replace bits of diamonds. That is definitely something to watch out for.
