What makes colored diamonds special is not so much the fact that they are colored, but that they are rare. There are various kinds of colored diamonds and they are available in what they call “Primary Colors”. These colors are yellow, pink, brown, blue, green, orange, purple, olive, black, white, red and grey.

These colors also vary in shade and intensity. Thus, a colored diamond can be vivid or light and a slight change in the strength of a colored diamond’s hue will spell the difference between paying a few thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

However in general, brown diamonds are more affordable as compared to other colored diamonds.

The brown diamond spectrum starts at light brown or champagne and next is medium brown, brown and dark brown or fancy cognac. Brown diamonds are most often paired with white or colorless diamonds when they are set into a piece of jewelry. In fact, brown diamonds are touted as the new classic, being similar to gold in color. Thus, it is unique, yet it retains a neutral feel.

The brown diamond finds its roots in Australia, Africa and Siberia. How are brown diamonds made? As we know, diamonds are made from carbon molecule which crystallize and form from the intense heat and pressure, one hundred fifty kilometers inside of the Earth’s mantle, very close to the Earth’s molten core. When the soil abnormally compresses the formation of the diamond, the result is a change in color, and sometimes, a brown diamond results from this.

It is very rare for the Earth to form a colored diamond, hence their very high value and price tag. It is very expensive and rare to find a huge colored diamond. Yet this did not stop the making of the Golden Jubilee diamond. This  is one of the largest faceted diamonds in the world. This diamond is a fancy yellow brown and it weighs a whopping five hundred and forty six point sixty seven carats. It was given to the King of Thailand in 1997 during his fifty-year coronation anniversary. It took all of three years to polish the Golden Jubilee.

As an accessory, the brown diamond is also touted as the new black. As we said earlier, it is the new classic. Brown diamonds are often characterized and described as similar to champagne for the light brown diamonds, and the high intensity ones as rich cognacs. The brown diamonds are warm, almost golden. They look modern yet timeless at the same time. They are neutral yet interesting.

Of course, Hollywood has caught on to the brown diamond craze. During the 2004 Academy Awards ceremony, television reporter Maria Menounos wore a three thousand carat champagne diamond dress. Meanwhile, Cameron Diaz donned a twenty-carat cognac diamond dress. Jennifer Love-Hewitt meanwhile wore a seven-carat diamond ring on her finger. They all looked chic, sophisticated, and undoubtedly stunning.
