Pure gold is graded as twenty-four karats. The number of karats indicates the amount of pure gold that the piece of jewelry contains. Therefore, it also follows that if you have an eighteen karat gold piece, that means it is made out of eighteen parts pure gold and six parts of another metal, or seventy-five percent gold.
The most popular kind of gold alloys today are the white gold kind. But way back in the twenties, white gold was already popular. It was used as a substitute for the more expensive platinum jewelry. To make white gold, goldsmiths mix pure gold with either nickel or palladium, to lend the gold a white sheen.
Nickel is the most commonly used gold alloy because it is reasonably priced and is the most similar to platinum in color. Palladium is also similar to platinum in looks, when it is combined with pure gold. The only downside to using palladium is that it is also quite expensive. But for those who are allergic to nickel, they have no choice but to use white gold made from palladium alloys.
Jewelers also use silver, platinum, chromium, cobalt, tin, zinc and indium to create white gold alloys. However, they do not have the same effect in terms of bleaching, as say nickel and palladium.
So how do you use white gold jewelry? The possibilities are infinite! Just like yellow gold, it can be used in necklaces, earrings, rings, brooches, pins, and the like. They can be set with precious stones, gems and diamonds. Many individuals love using white gold with diamonds because they believe that it complements the diamond crystals the most.
Also, white gold and diamond combinations lend an air of sophistication as it is subtle and elegant. When compared to yellow gold and diamond combinations, the white gold and diamond combinations are often preferred by modern individuals because of the tendency of the yellow gold to look too tacky.
