Pink Diamonds
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Indeed! But now, girls have a new best friend—the pink diamond. If you are surprised that there is such as thing as a pink diamond, you will be even more surprised to know that such diamonds are naturally occurring on Earth. They are rare though, as colored diamonds are the result of the combination of elements that are exposed to a diamond’s formation.

The value of a colored diamond is based on the strength or intensity of its color. The more intense or vivid the color of a diamond is, the more expensive and higher in value. Colored diamonds come in yellow, green, black, orange, white, brown, purple, red, blue, olive, grey, and pink.
Of late, pink diamonds have been the diamond du jure of today’s movie stars and celebrities as well as of royalty and people of high social standing. It is not hard to see why. The pink diamond is feminine, delicate and beautiful. It is so rare that only a select number of mines in the world produce these pink diamonds. Tanzania, Brazil, India and Argyle in North West Australia are the few pink diamond producing countries in the world.
Unlike other colored diamonds, it is still not known how exactly the pink diamond gets its color. However it is believed that it is the pressure resulting from the raising of a diamond from the earth’s inner core to its surface that makes a diamond pink. The most favored pink diamonds are the ones that are purely pink in color to the reddish pink ones.
The pink diamond first made its mark in history in 1526, when the Rajah of Agrah gifted Mogul Emperor Babur a pink diamond in return for saving his life. Emperor Babur loved the pink diamond so much that he donned it on his turban for several years.
According to legend, the pink diamond was rumored to have had its origins in the Barramundi Gap. Here’s how the story goes. A barramundi was sought after by some women, and because the barramundi did not have any way of escape, the barramundi jumped over the women, leaving behind her scales on the waters of the cave. These scales turned out to be colored diamonds, hence the presence of colored diamonds in the Barramundi Gap. Some of these diamonds happened to be pink.
Hollywood stars are not immune to the allure of the pink diamond. In fact, during the 2004 Academy Awards, Vivica Fox shone brightly on the red carpet when she wore a pink diamond encrusted gown. Salma Hayek had a six point seventeen intense pink diamond, while Kelly Price wore a pink heart shaped diamond in the Grammy Awards.
Meanwhile Jennifer Lopez, or J.Lo as she is known today, received a six point five carat pink diamond engagement ring in the shape of a heart. Victoria Beckham aka Posh Spice was also gifted with a pink diamond ring by David Beckham. The ring reportedly cost him a whopping one million US dollars.
