Red Diamonds

A diamond is a naturally occurring substance that is an allotrope of carbon, which is formed deep within the surface of the earth. What makes a diamond different from other carbon substances is the arrangement of its molecules. In this case, because of the extremely high pressure and heat deep within the earth, the molecules of carbon are bonded in a tetrahedral arrangement, which makes the diamond the way it is.

When one speaks of diamonds, the image of a clear, colorless rock springs to mind. However, colorless diamonds are not the be all and end all of this famous stone. In fact, there are even more valuable and rarer diamonds, and these are the colored diamonds. The reason why there are colored diamonds is because somewhere along the way, during the formation of the diamond, a chemical or an element interfered or contaminated the process. Hence, the change in the stone’s color and appearance.

There are various colors that can result from this “aberration” in the diamond’s formation. These are pink, black, purple, red, orange, gray, blue and green. Ideally, a colored diamond must have an intense or deep color for it to be considered extremely valuable. However, the probability of this is very rare. And even the light colored diamonds fetch really high prices in the market. The choice of what color of diamond you want to own is ultimately a matter of taste.

However, if you want to go bold with your diamonds, try on a red diamond. The red diamond is one of the rarest gems in the world. The average person will probably never encounter such a stone in his lifetime and most jewelers have probably never even seen a real red diamond as well. That is because there are less than twenty red diamonds (natural diamonds) that are in existence. Hence, their high price tag and high value.

According to the Gemological Institute of America, the largest red diamond that their laboratories have graded was a five point eleven carat red diamond, called the Red Shield and later on it was christened the Moussaieff Red. The Moussaieff Red was purchased by Moussaieff Jewelers for eight million US dollars, thereby making each carat cost around two million US dollars. What makes the red diamonds even more elusive is that from the twenty existing stones today, only a few are being sold because their owners would rather keep them or put them in museums.

Another reason why red diamonds are so prized is because red is the color of love. A lot of men have been giving their lady-loves engagement rings with rubies as the central stone in place of colorless diamonds. However, if you can afford it, why not go for red diamonds? Red diamonds are sure to sparkle and will not doubt make any woman fall in love with you and say yes. However, because the realistic possibilities of one ever coming across a red diamond for sale are pretty slim, rubies are a good alternative.
