The rarity of the colored diamond is due to the fact that the physical conditions necessary to make a diamond a certain color occur very scarcely. Therefore, apart from the difficulty entailed in the formation of a colorless diamond, colored diamonds also require the exposure to trace elements to affect a color change. Therefore, if nitrogen interacts in the diamond formation process, a yellow diamond results. The more nitrogen present in the diamond’s structure, the more yellow the diamond.
The natural diamond color scale ranges from the colorless diamond, designated as D, to the very light yellow diamond, designated as Z. However, there are also diamonds that are lower on the scale and these are the fancy yellow or Canary diamonds. They have a pure yellow hue making them very unique and rare. The value of a yellow diamond is based on its strength of color, among other things. The intensity levels of a yellow diamond range from vivid, being the strongest, to light. Thus, a yellow diamond should be compared against the intensity chart to determine if it is vivid, intense, fancy or light.
The yellow diamond or the canary diamond is gaining popularity for its dramatic yet subtle appeal. It is being requested by elegant, sophisticated and glamorous women everywhere, as it is easy to use and match as well. Yet, it is still not as common as the colorless diamond. The yellow diamond is mostly found in South Africa, and it was the first diamond to ever be authenticated in Africa as well. This diamond was called “Eureka” and it weighed ten point seven carats. This was way back in 1866. Since then, the yellow diamond has been in demand and continues to gain a steady following.
Among the famous canary diamonds that have made their mark historically is the Red Cross diamond presented to Christies on behalf of the British Red Cross Society, where a Maltese Cross was featured in its top facet. Another one is the “Incomparable”, aptly called for its huge size, as it weighs four hundred and seven point forty-eight carats. This diamond was accidentally discovered by a little girl from Congo, who was playing in her town of Mbuji Mayi with a pile of rubble. It is the third largest diamond in the world to date and is also the world’s largest internally flawless diamond.
Even the famous Medicis of Florence, Italy, once owned a canary diamond which weighed one hundred and forty carats. However, it was passed on to Emperor Francis the First in 1743, who used this diamond to adorn his crown. However today, no one knows where the diamond is and who owns it.
